FAQs

What is Grafton Sciences?

Grafton Sciences is a research and engineering company developing a flexible substrate for exploration in the physical world. We train models and build the factories they need to design experiments, engineer processes, and manufacture physical outcomes. Our work focuses on creating systems with general physical ability so that exploration and learning can reinforce each other at scale. We see this as the least bottlenecked path to building superintelligence.

What does “general physical ability” mean?

General physical ability refers to an AI system’s capacity to do almost anything that can be done in the physical world. This includes running experiments, engineering new systems, and manufacturing physical products. A system with general physical ability can act, test, build, and refine ideas directly in real environments. Once a system can do that, it can unlock a much larger space of discovery, invention, and improvement than learning from data alone.

What does the least bottlenecked path to building superintelligence?

We believe the fastest route to superintelligence is not through larger models alone but through systems that can explore and learn in the real world. A substrate for physical exploration gives an AI the ability to test its own ideas, generate new knowledge, and improve its capabilities through direct interaction with real processes. When exploration and learning amplify one another, the path to more capable intelligence becomes far less constrained.

What is Grafton’s mission?

Our mission is to build an open ended substrate for physical exploration and pair it with powerful learning systems. We believe that unifying exploration and learning is a key step toward more capable AI systems and toward a new rate of scientific and technical progress.

What projects is Grafton working on?

Our platform is designed to support a wide range of scientific and engineering goals. As part of validating this approach, ARPA-H awarded us $42.5 million to pursue an early cancer detection challenge. This is one example of the many domains where our exploration substrate can generate new insights or capabilities.

Who funds Grafton Sciences?

Grafton Sciences has received significant support from ARPA-H, including a $42.5 million award to demonstrate the potential of our physical exploration platform. We are also supported by other leading partners who share our vision for a new class of AI systems grounded in real world capability.

Is Grafton Sciences the same as Grafton Biosciences?

Yes. Grafton Biosciences was the earlier version of our organization. As our scope expanded beyond biotechnology to general physical ability, we adopted the name Grafton Sciences to reflect this broader mission.

Where is Grafton Sciences located?

Grafton Sciences has offices and facilities in San Francisco and Redwood City, California. These locations support our integrated research, engineering, and manufacturing environments.

How can I join Grafton Sciences?

We are building a small, world class team of researchers and engineers who are excited about building superintelligence. To learn more about open roles, visit our Careers page.
